Palace of Doubt less answers to fewer questions 11.4 x 15.2cm, 24 pages, edition of 200, 1997 a random access book $4.95 Palace Of Doubt is written in seemingly disconnected thoughts, reading it is a puzzle, understanding comes as you immerse yourself in the artists universe of strange drawings, unusual fragments, and clippings. If you commit the effort, you will be greatly rewarded. Here, the artists present fragmented world. From an insane postman, to an art test, life instructions, to a UFO lamp. Taly and Russ wander in a world of their own as they jumps styles frequently and hold the reader's attention through a collage of personal insights. The CAUTION RISK OF ELETRIC SHOCK warning on the back gives you a sense of the underlying humor. "Palace of Doubt" by Taly and Russ Johnson: This little treat is a real experience. You have to work with it a little to figure out how to read the whole thing. That was fun. Like looking for the next lines in the Gilbert + Sarah piece, that was different, but I guess some folks might think it rather annoying. I didn't. It reminds me of a book by Buckminster Fuller that I read a long time ago. Each page is like an art piece of graphic and quotes and words. It forces you to be more aware of the visual arts. Other than that. I'm not sure what the point is. Then again I ain't the smartest guy in town. Definitely enjoyable." - -Mike Petersen from Muuna Takeena #6 January 2000 pp.29, Vantaa, Finland |
